After dinner we turned the lights out and played 'hide-and-seek'. In the dark, I touched a hand, a very cold hand. Now, because of the game, I had to hide in the dark with... with this cold person - not speaking, not knowing who it was. Slowly the others found us, hid with us, until we were all there - all thirteen. Thirteen? But there were only twelve people in the house! We touched each other in the dark, counting. Thirteen. Quickly, nervously, I lit a match to see...

You want to be frightened. That is why you are reading these six ghost stories. It is dark outside and you are alone in an old house. On the wall there is a picture of a strange man with eyes that are alive and watching you. There is a room in this old house which makes you cold when you enter it, cold all the way down your back. And this is the room where, long ago, somebody died — very suddenly. And there is, perhaps, something standing behind you now, close enough to touch you... don't look round. You know it's there. Do you really want to see something from your worst dreams?

Each of these six stories leads you into the land of the dead, where you should never go alone, and where the past has a frightening habit of repeating itself - for ever.
